August 2021 Update

Dear Ones:

NO Fear! This logo was plastered on hats and shirts all over the country several years ago. It was an attempt among young people to appear “macho” and fearless in an uncertain world. In my estimation, it was a façade for “courage,” but actually hiding the underlying sense of fearful hopelessness. Opioid and other illegal drug addictions mushroomed, and still do, in the attempt to quell the raging inner struggles with emptiness and depression. Crying “NO FEAR” doesn’t change things, any more than telling someone you’re “fine” when in reality you’re miserable!

“Fear” is a God-given emotion in the proper context. I should be afraid of touching high-voltage wires or getting too close to the edge of a cliff; likewise, I should fear sin and disobedience, for only “fools make a mock of sin.” (Prov. 14:9) But then there’s the flip-side in Prov. 1:7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning [chief part] of knowledge…” That “fear,” among other things, means to “take God seriously” in every aspect of life. Without this “fear” or faith even smart people are “stupid.” (cf. 1 Cor. 2:14) In fact, the right “fear” conquers all other fears and anxieties. To fear God is NOT to fear! (cf. 2 Tim. 1:7)

He says, “Fear thou not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed [lit. shook up], for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee; yea [yes], I will help thee; I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness”(Isa. 41:10). Significantly, there are 365 “fear nots” in the Bible; one for every day of the year! Is that just a coincidence? I confess that in this crazy and corrupt world I need every one of them daily! PTL!

It’s been a whole year since my precious wife Chris was promoted to Glory. I continue to “rejoice through the tears” in times of loneliness, etc. but am so grateful for the Lord’s special grace to continue His course of action for me. My schedule is full and seems to be getting “fuller.” The new book on Pentecost should be out soon; the opening date for the new Mission building is now scheduled for October. It’s a beautiful and functional edifice which will hopefully be utilized totally to glorify our God, reaching precious souls with Truth. Please pray that we will be faithful to this glorious task. Personally, I’m doing very well, trying to keep body, soul, and spirit together. I have become more serious in my exercise routine so as to develop and maintain my physical and mental strength. I feel the power of your prayers, for which I am so grateful. In mid-July I was “released” from my Oncologist after 5 years of being cancer-free! Indeed, I’m blessed and thankful! I sense the hand of God upon my life as never before, and don’t want to miss out on anything that He wants me to accomplish. (Phil. 1:20, 21) Thanks for standing in the gap.

My love to each of you,

Bill Finnigan
