August 2024 Update

Dear Ones:

It’s rare these days to hear the song “Onward Christian Soldiers marching as to war...” Has the church forgotten or ignored that we are engaged in the battle for eternal souls and “against spiritual wickedness in high places”? Have we laid our armor down and settled for the “easy believism” so prevalent today? At the end of his life, Paul boldly testified of having “fought a good fight.” The life of the Spirit-filled believer is really a fight to the finish, clothed in the “whole armor” and bolstered by the assurance of Christ’s victory!

I heartily salute and honor those who have bravely served in our nation’s military. I still come to attention when hearing “Stars and Stripes Forever” and especially “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. When asked if I’ve ever served in the military, I’ve responded regretfully, “no, but I’m part of the Lord’s Salvation Army.” Though never a “Salvationist” per/se, I have admired their spiritual history. Led by their founder Gen. William Booth, they “battled” for lost souls on the streets of London in 19th Cent. England.

Having just lost two close friends and fellow warriors of the Faith, I’ve thought more seriously about Paul’s challenge to “endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ....” (2 Tim.2:3) Pastor/Missionary Bill Aiken (age 83) and Bible scholar Dr. Bob Lescelius (age 91) were recently promoted to Glory within a few hours of each other. What a privilege to know and love these spiritual giants! Their funerals were simple with no taps played or gunshot salutes, etc. but there sure was a “trumpet” sound in Heaven! Amen!

A lot of good things were said at each memorial service that should have been said to these men when they were alive. If you have a Word-filled, faithful pastor who feeds your soul, etc. be sure to communicate your appreciation to him. Too many “soldiers of the cross” have been wounded and are leaving the battle field. Remember, your pastor and his family are human, needing your prayer and encouragement like everyone else. Satan works “overtime” to destroy godly shepherds, knowing that the sheep will be scattered. Let’s re-sign for duty, considering the following challenge by Isaac Watts:

“Am I a soldier of the cross, A foll'wer of the Lamb?

And shall I fear to own His cause, Or blush to speak His name?

Sure, I must fight, if I would reign; Increase my courage, Lord!

I'll bear the toil, endure the pain, Supported by Thy Word.”

Thank you so much for your intercession as I minister the Word. I just returned from a delightful time of P&R (preaching and relaxation) at Bemus Pt., NY. I needed a break; but have gladly returned refreshed and ready for the next battle on the home front.

With loving gratitude to you all,

Pastor Bill
